We designed a “sense-acttreat” system through combining a ratiometric pH sensor with a therapeutic gold nanocage. Our studies demonstrate that smart nanodevices could “sense” the tumor.These nanodevices exhibit green fl uorescence at physiological conditions, but pH-activated red fluorescence in acidic micro-environment. Besides, the nanodevice is also applicable in chemotherapy and hyperthermia for “treating” the tumor by simply controlling the NIR irradiation power density and the irradiation time. Considering that AuNCs are wonderful contrast agents for a variety of imaging modalities including photo acoustic tomography and optical coherence tomography, multimodal imaging would be further investigated. In light of these advantages, our work provides design strategies for novel “sense-act-treat” systems for cancer therapy.
