  By simply absorbing AuNCs on GO through the electrostatic interactions, we have obtained the synergistic GO-AuNCs hybrid (GA) that exhibits excellent peroxidase-like activity. GA, as a mimic peroxidase, shows several unprecedented advantages. First of all, as compared to natural enzymes, GA is a promising candidate as enzyme mimics with advantages of ease of preparation, low-cost, and stability. Second, GA shows surprisingly high catalytic activity over a broad pH range, even at neutral pH. Kinetic analysis indicates that the activity of GA at neutral pH is comparable to that of the natural enzyme HRP at the same condition. Furthermore, with a rich variety of functional groups and large specifi c surface areas, GO possesses some additional virtues, such as ease of functional modifi cation and effective absorption of fl uorescence molecules or drugs. Here, we take advantage of the folic acid conjugated GO-AuNCs hybrid to design and develop a simple, cheap, and highly selective and sensitive colorimetric assay to detect cancer cells. Our work will facilitate the utilization of the intrinsic peroxidase activity of the GFA in medical diagnostics and biotechnology. We envision that the engineered catalytic graphene-based material will hold great promises in potential applications, such as biocatalyst, nanosensors and molecular carriers.
