    We develop a rational approach to construct the AuNPs supported on bifunctionalized mesoporous silica (MSN) (MSN-AuNPs), which possess dual enzyme activities similar to those of peroxidase and oxidase. To the best of our knowledge, this is the fi rst example of use of AuNPs as the oxidase mimic. The peroxidase-like activity originating from MSN-AuNPs can catalyze H 2 O 2 decomposition into pH, while the MSN-AuNPs with oxidase-like activity are also able to generate ROS. Owing to the excellent antibacterial capacity of ROS, the MSN-AuNPs exhibit striking antibacterial properties against both Gram-negative ( E. coli ) and Gram-positive ( S. aureus ) bacteria. Moreover, the MSN-AuNPs-based antibacterial system also shows high efficiency in breaking down the existing biofilm and preventing formation of new biofi lm. Our studies provide strong evidence that MSN-AuNPs can be utilized as the effi cient antibacterial agent.
